It was an honour to participate and have the opportunity to share with the author —so greatly appreciated and admired by me— the following reflections and questions:

Deborah Levy says that every time she reads Jamieson, she falls in love with life all over again. Something similar happens to me: every time I read her, I fall in love with psychoanalysis again. And that, after so much time —and money— invested in this endeavor, is deeply appreciated.

It’s hard for me to pinpoint exactly what it is in her writing that I don’t find in other authors. Perhaps it’s her ability to connect deeply contemporary concerns with classical questions of psychoanalytic theory and clinic. In doing so, she offers novelty in repetition, pushing us to keep thinking.

It may also have to do with the fact that she puts her body into the text — deliberately. Or with something more formal: the way she weaves together clinical cases, autobiography, theory, following the logic of the text rather than a preexisting agenda.

, reads to me almost like a manifesto. The red cover of the English edition, the exclamatory titles like “End Your Analysis!” or assertive ones like “Damaged Life,” reinforce that impression. Perhaps that wasn’t the intention, but I do think the book defends a particular way of doing psychoanalysis — and with it, its unique function and necessary place in the world.

Throughout the book, Jamieson returns to the proposals of Freud and Lacan regarding psychoanalytic technique and the analyst’s position. The patient is asked to associate freely: that is, to say whatever comes to mind without censorship. The analyst, for their part, practices abstinence: abstaining from giving opinions, advice, or rescue. They do not heal from a place of moral authority, but from its subversion.

To do this, the analyst must split their attention between the patient, their own self-restraint, and intellectual activity; they cannot indulge in narcissism. In Jamieson’s words: “The analytic position is one the analyst does not identify with or take it as equal to him or herself; it is merely a space occupied by the one who welcomes discourse, who supports a question but does not answer the question, leaving that answer to come from the patient.”

The analyst listens to the analysand’s speech, to their signifiers — but can only do so by silencing their own conscious knowledge and letting themselves be pierced by both the patient’s unconscious voice and their own. Interpretation, then, must be as surprising for the analyst as it is for the patient. As if it literally fell out of their mouth.

But Jamieson also points out what might prevent the analyst from sustaining this position: the desire to hold onto a place of prestige and power; affiliation with institutions that have their own interests; and —if I may add— the analyst’s own ideas about what constitutes a “good life,” or even their political inclinations.

Today, there is a great deal of discussion around the violences psychoanalysis has exercised —and sometimes still exercises— on those who dissent from the norm, especially the heteronorm. This is the context from which critiques like Paul Preciado’s emerge. But Jamieson writes:

“There is a great desire for psychoanalysis to be the site of collective transformation. I understand that desire: to want psychoanalytic change to work beyond the one-on-one relationship, beyond our impotent work, patient by patient. But I have my doubts that it can be more than that without degenerating into sectarian control, without losing the intensity created by time and singular listening, which are necessary for true transformation.”

With that in mind, I’d like to ask you a first question, Jamieson:

We know that many of the critiques of psychoanalysis stem from its complicity in symbolic and normative violence — especially toward sexual and gender dissidence — and that responding to these critiques often requires taking clear and affirmative political positions. However, a central part of psychoanalytic ethics has been precisely not to adopt a prescriptive stance on what is desirable or valuable for the subject, but rather to sustain the transference without directing it toward a norm.

(1) How, then, can psychoanalysis respond critically to these forms of violence without abandoning its structural commitment to singularity and unconscious knowledge? How can we sustain an ethics of abstinence —neither moralizing nor normative— without disavowing the social and political effects of the power position that analysts sometimes occupy or assume?

My second question, more clinical in nature, relates to what you revisit in the book about the beginning of analysis. Lacan said that analysis can only begin when the patient formulates a question — an implicit demand for analysis — and that preliminary sessions should lead to this point. You also cite Edward Glover, who claimed that people no longer ask questions, and therefore no longer truly occupy the position of analyst.

(2) Have you observed this in your own clinical practice? Do you think we find it harder today to formulate truly analytic questions? And practically speaking, what kind of question must be posed for an analysis to really begin?

I’d like to conclude the section on psychoanalytic culture by referring to the chapter titled “Solitude,” which I found especially beautiful. There, you reflect on what it means to be in training: the strange and demanding experience of occupying the position of analyst for the first time, of standing in that uncertain space between one’s personal history and the history of psychoanalysis itself.

You recount the path of Rosine Lefort, a patient of Lacan and a pioneer in working with young children diagnosed with infantile psychosis. The case of Nadia is central: a pre-verbal child with whom Rosine manages to open a fundamental process of symbolization, a separation that makes exchange and desire possible.

During this work with Nadia, Rosine interrupts her own analysis because she cannot sustain both processes simultaneously. And that interruption, far from being an abandonment, marks a gap that allows for the emergence of her desire as an analyst — just as the introduction of distance marks a founding separation for Nadia. Rosine’s invention of herself as a psychoanalyst becomes synonymous with the child’s cure.

You write: “If desire transforms into a desire for psychoanalysis, then it’s a desire we must let the trainees invent for themselves.” And you warn that when training becomes a set of prescribed rules, that desire is extinguished.

So my third question would be: (3) how can we envision an institution that, without renouncing the regulatory frameworks that are historically situated and necessary for practice, can also sustain that space of invention, of desire, and of solitude that training requires? How do we avoid institutional belonging smothering what is most alive in the analytic experience?

Finally, at one point in the book, you mention that one of Lacan’s least recognized gestures was separating the truth that emerges from Freud’s discovery, psychoanalysis, from the imaginary and phantasmatic component tied to Freud’s own desire. This made me think of the very birth of psychoanalysis —Freud’s self-analysis in 

— where theory and personal experience are inseparably intertwined. Psychoanalysis emerges there as an embodied theory: thinking oneself means dreaming, writing, interpreting oneself.

Something of that also runs through your writing. When you write the appendix in 

, you get appendicitis; when you work on panic, panic dreams appear. The body responds, as if analytic writing could not avoid housing something of the Real. This brought to mind the notion of autotheory —a term launched by Preciado and made central by Maggie Nelson— and its commitment to conceptual elaboration infused with lived experience.

So my final question would be: (4) how do you think about the link between psychoanalysis and autotheory? What place does the auto-analytic dimension have in the analyst’s writing, but also in the subjective elaboration of the analysand?

Deborah Levy dice que cada vez que lee a Jamieson se vuelve a enamorar de la vida. A mí me ocurre algo parecido: cada vez que la leo, me reconcilio con el psicoanálisis. Y eso, después de tanto tiempo —y dinero— invertido en esta empresa, se agradece profundamente.

Me cuesta precisar qué hay exactamente en su escritura que no encuentro en otros autores. Tal vez sea su capacidad para vincular inquietudes profundamente contemporáneas con cuestiones clásicas de la teoría y la clínica psicoanalítica. En ese movimiento, logra ofrecernos novedad en la repetición, empujándonos a seguir pensando.

Puede también que tenga que ver con el hecho de que pone el cuerpo en sus textos, de forma deliberada. O con algo más formal: la manera en que entrelaza casos clínicos, autobiografía, teoría, siguiendo la lógica del texto y no una agenda previa.

, se me presenta casi como un manifiesto. La cubierta roja de la edición inglesa, los títulos exclamativos como “¡Termina tu análisis!” o afirmativos como “Vida dañada” refuerzan esa impresión. Quizás no sea esa la intención, pero creo que el libro sí defiende una manera particular de hacer psicoanálisis y, con ella, su función única y su lugar necesario en el mundo.

A lo largo del libro, Jamieson retoma la propuesta de Freud y Lacan sobre la técnica psicoanalítica y la posición del analista. Al paciente se le pide que asocie libremente, que diga lo que le viene a la mente sin filtros. El analista, por su parte, practica la abstinencia: se abstiene de opinar, de aconsejar, de salvar. No cura desde una autoridad moral, sino desde su subversión.

Para ello, el analista debe dividirse entre la atención al paciente, el autocontrol y la actividad intelectual; no puede entregarse al narcisismo. En palabras de Jamieson: “La posición analítica es una con la cual el analista no se identifica ni se toma como igual a sí mismo; es simplemente un espacio ocupado por el que acoge el discurso, el que apoya una pregunta, pero no la responde, dejando que la respuesta venga del paciente”.

El analista escucha los significantes del analizante, pero solo puede hacerlo si silencia su saber consciente y se deja atravesar tanto por la voz inconsciente del paciente como por la suya propia. La interpretación, entonces, debe ser tan sorprendente para el analista como lo es para el paciente. Como si cayera literalmente de su boca.

Pero también Jamieson señala lo que puede impedirle sostener esta posición: el deseo de conservar un lugar de prestigio y poder; la afiliación a instituciones con intereses propios; y, me permito añadir, las ideas del analista sobre lo que constituye una “buena vida” o incluso sus inclinaciones políticas.

Hoy se habla mucho de las violencias que el psicoanálisis ha ejercido —y a veces sigue ejerciendo— sobre quienes disienten de la norma, en particular la heteronorma. De ahí críticas como las de Paul Preciado. Pero ante esto, Jamieson escribe:

“Hay un gran deseo de que el psicoanálisis sea el lugar de la transformación colectiva. Entiendo ese deseo: querer que el cambio psicoanalítico funcione más allá de la relación uno a uno, de nuestro trabajo impotente, paciente a paciente. Pero tengo mis dudas de que pueda ser más que eso sin degenerar en un control sectario, sin perder la intensidad que crean el tiempo y la escucha singular, necesarios para una verdadera transformación.”

Y aquí me gustaría abordar una primera cuestión:

Sabemos que muchas de las críticas al psicoanálisis provienen de su implicación en violencias simbólicas y normativas —en especial hacia las disidencias sexuales y de género— y que responder a esas críticas exige, en ocasiones, asumir posiciones políticas claras y afirmativas. Sin embargo, una parte central de la ética psicoanalítica ha consistido precisamente en no adoptar una posición prescriptiva sobre lo que es deseable o valioso para el sujeto, en sostener la transferencia sin dirigirla hacia una norma.

Me gustaría preguntar, entonces, cómo puede el psicoanálisis responder críticamente a esas violencias sin abandonar su apuesta estructural por la singularidad y el saber inconsciente. Y, también, cómo podemos sostener una ética de la abstinencia —no moralizante ni normativa— sin desentendernos de los efectos sociales y políticos del lugar de poder que, a veces, los analistas ocupan o asumen.

Mi segunda pregunta, más centrada en la dimensión clínica, se refiere a lo que retomas en el libro sobre el inicio del análisis. Lacan decía que el análisis solo puede comenzar cuando el paciente formula una pregunta, una demanda implícita de análisis, y que las sesiones preliminares deben conducir a ese punto. También citas a Edward Glover, quien afirmaba que ya no se hacen preguntas y, por tanto, ya nadie ocupa verdaderamente la posición de analista.

¿Has constatado eso en tu experiencia clínica? ¿Crees que hoy nos cuesta más formular preguntas? Y, en términos prácticos, ¿qué características deberían tener esas preguntas para que puedan iniciar un análisis?

Quisiera cerrar el tema de la praxis psicoanalítica con el capítulo titulado “Soledad”, que me pareció especialmente bello. Ahí hablas de lo que implica formarse como psicoanalista: atravesar la experiencia extraña y exigente de ocupar por primera vez la posición de analista, de sostenerse en ese lugar incierto entre la historia personal que uno lleva consigo y la historia del propio psicoanálisis.

Relatas el recorrido de Rosine Lefort, paciente de Lacan y pionera en el trabajo con niños diagnosticados con psicosis infantil. Nadia es una niña pre-verbal con quien Rosine logra inscribir una simbolización fundamental, a través de la inscripción de la diferencia entre ambas, sus cuerpos y sus bocas, que abre camino al deseo.

Durante ese trabajo con Nadia, Rosine interrumpe su análisis porque no puede sostener ambas cosas a la vez. Y esa interrupción, lejos de ser un abandono, marca una brecha que permite la emergencia de su deseo como analista, al igual que la introducción de la diferencia crea una simbolización fundante para Nadia. Inventarse a sí misma como psicoanalista se convierte en sinónimo de la cura de esta niña.

Escribes: “Si el deseo se transforma en un deseo de psicoanálisis, entonces es un deseo que debemos dejar que los aprendices inventen por sí mismos”. Y adviertes que, cuando la formación se convierte en un conjunto de reglas prescritas, ese deseo se apaga.

Mi tercera pregunta sería entonces: ¿cómo pensar una institución que, sin renunciar a los marcos regulatorios necesarios —y siempre situados históricamente—, pueda sostener ese espacio de invención, de deseo y de soledad, o mas bien solitud, que la formación requiere? ¿Cómo evitar que la pertenencia institucional acabe ahogando lo más vivo de la experiencia analítica?

Finalmente, en algún momento del libro señalas que uno de los gestos menos reconocidos de Lacan fue separar la verdad del psicoanálisis freudiano de su componente imaginario y fantasmático ligado al deseo del propio Freud. Esto me hace pensar en el autoanálisis de Freud en 

, donde la experiencia personal con los sueños y el deseo son la base de la construcción de la teoría. El psicoanálisis nace como una teoría encarnada: pensarse pasa por soñarse, escribirse, interpretarse.

Algo de eso atraviesa también tu escritura. Cuando escribes el apéndice de 

, tienes una apendicitis; cuando trabajas sobre el pánico, creas sueños de pánico. El cuerpo responde, como si la escritura analítica no pudiera evitar alojar algo de lo real.

Esto me hizo pensar en la autoteoría —término que inventa Paul Preciado y que Maggie Nelson ha vuelto central— y en su apuesta por una elaboración conceptual atravesada por la experiencia vivida.

Mi última pregunta, entonces, sería: ¿cómo piensas el vínculo entre psicoanálisis y autoteoría? ¿Qué lugar tiene, para ti, la dimensión autoanalítica en la escritura del analista, pero también en la elaboración subjetiva de un analizante?
